about us

our history

Upper and Lower Caldecote are pleasant villages just west of Biggleswade on the other side of the A1. The site of a medieval settlement is close to the green in Upper Caldecote. The village has a school for young children, two churches and two shops.

Caldecote Playing Fields Association is a voluntary organisation run by a committee of people whose main aim is to promote sporting activities in the village.  In 1955 the new Playing Field was used for the first time by the Cricket team. They had originally played in a meadow on Water Lane, which is now the reservoir. A small pavilion was built by Dawson’s of Shefford at a cost of £500.

It was on the 24th February 1970 that the Cricket Club called a meeting to form the Playing Fields Association Committee. This was to enable a grant to be obtained to build showers for the Football Club. The Parish Council gave the newly formed committee a 28 year lease of the field. The new showers and extension was opened in August 1973, made possible by a 50% grant from the Sports Council.

The bar was opened in 1974, which made a big contribution to the social side of sport. The lounge was put on in 1980 and the children’s corner completed in 1992. 2003 saw a complete refurbishment of the club house. For four months our club was run from two porta cabins, sited next to the new changing facilities. Thankfully it was a hot summer. Then on October 31st we moved back into our much improved club house. Barbara Cassani officially opened this on the 16th November 2003.

We have come a long way in 33 years and provide not only a wide range of sports but also a full and active social calendar
